Online Class: Still-Life as Self-Portraiture
When is a portrait not a portrait? Is it possible to make portraits of objects or non-animal subjects? Can we make self-portraits and not be physically in the frame? How do we use objects, compositions, light, form, line, shadow to convey emotion? How do we express our memories, dreams, hopes, deceptions, loss, aspirations, hope, love, grief, trauma, etc.? How do we use symbolism and metaphor to communicate our inner states? How do we tell our stories using these elements?
These questions will guide us in our quest to create still life photos that offer glimpses into our inner worlds. The goal of this class is to generate new work using the concepts and ideas presented here.
The class is for intermediate level photographers (basic photography principles and how to operate the camera will not be covered). During the 6 weeks of the class, we’ll make lots of new images. We'll push the boundaries of self-portraiture by intentionally keeping our physical selves out of the frame. We'll explore the emotionality of inanimate objects, fruits, plant materials. We'll dive into story-telling using objects that occupy space in our daily lives. In telling our personal stories with curated objects and "stand-ins," we can create images that speak a universal language.
The course will be composed of six sessions of 90 minutes each, with a short break in the middle. Each week there will be handouts and assignments to be completed and shared during class time. We’ll have time for sharing work, discussion and questions. Class is limited to seven participants.
